Race Day by Josh Spears
Roiling, gray-darkened heaven.
Cold rain—windblown and furious
Falls in heavy loads on impatient hearts
While windows fog in fettered wait.
Taut legs—cramped and anxious
Long for release from restless internment
As lightning cleanses passing skies.
Restive crowd—consumed and nebulous
Wends through concrete encasement
Where thickening haze envelops hope.
Stiff bodies—poured and tenuous
Rust in lactic rest.
